Threads and X are both short-post networks, but they reward different posts. X allows 280 characters for most accounts and counts every link as 23 of them; Threads allows 500 characters and up to 5 links a post. Meta reported 500 million monthly active users on Threads in June 2026. For most brands the answer is both: the same idea, written twice, once for each.

The short version: X's 280 characters reward one sharp line; Threads' 500 give room for the full thought and more links. Write a version for each instead of pasting one post into both. Figures are from X's developer docs, the Threads API docs and Meta's newsroom.

What is the character limit on Threads vs X?

X allows 280 characters per post for most accounts, and X's paid tiers allow far longer posts. Every link is shortened through t.co and counts as 23 characters, and emoji count as 2. Threads allows 500 characters per post. Our character limits guide lists every network with its source, and the X character counter applies X's rules as you type.

Threads, on paper: a post can carry up to 5 links, and a link does not eat into a 280-character budget. On X a link costs 23 of your 280 characters. Whichever you use, put the point in the post itself; people decide whether to click from the words around the link.

Can you schedule posts on Threads and X?

On X, yes: X Pro has a scheduler for X Pro accounts, and our guide to scheduling a tweet has the steps. On Threads, yes: Adam Mosseri announced native scheduling on January 23, 2025, so you can queue posts in the app itself. Scheduling tools post to both through each platform's API.

Should a brand post on Threads, X or both?

Both, if your audience is on both, with a version written for each. A 450-character Threads post does not fit X, and a 280-character X post can feel thin on Threads, where people expect the full thought. Lead with the point on X; add the reasoning, an example or a question on Threads. Choose the hours from the best time to post on X, and if you are also weighing Bluesky, read Bluesky vs Threads.

Posting to Threads and X from one place

We make Skryvo, so read this with that in mind. It writes a separate version of each post for each network, inside that network's limit and in your brand's voice, and publishes them on one calendar. X publishing is live; Threads is built and waiting for Meta to finish reviewing our app, so see Skryvo for Threads for the status and Skryvo for X for what works today.

I wrote this myself. I have built mobile apps and websites for companies in the US and Europe since 2022, and I built Skryvo after one too many AI drafts fell apart the moment someone checked a fact. Everything I publish here is tested on my own work first, and I show the numbers, including the ones that did not go my way.
