Twitter character counter
Most counters count letters. X counts weight: every link is 23, every emoji is 2. This one uses X's own rules, so 280 here is 280 on X. It runs in your browser.
– / 280
How does X count characters?
X gives each post 280 units of weight. Latin letters, numbers and common punctuation weigh 1. Every emoji weighs 2, including skin tones and family emoji. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters weigh 2, so a post in those scripts holds 140. Every link counts as 23, however long it is, because X shortens it. These rules come from X's character counting docs and its open-source twitter-text configuration.
Twitter character counter: questions
What is the Twitter character limit?
280 for most accounts, counted by weight: links count as 23, and emoji and CJK characters count as 2. Paid X accounts can post longer.
Do links count toward the 280 characters?
Yes, every link counts as 23 characters whatever its real length.
Do emoji count as one character or two?
Two. Every emoji counts as 2, including emoji with skin tones and family emoji joined together.
Do @mentions count?
Mentions you type count normally. The @mention X adds automatically at the start of a reply does not.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Counting runs in your browser.
Every limit on every network: social media character limits. Posting at the right hour: the best time to post on X.
