Choose Buffer if you post to X, Bluesky, Mastodon or a few channels and want a free plan: it costs $5 a month per channel after the free 3. Choose Later if you post to many visual networks, especially Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest, and want a link-in-bio page and a visual planner: $18.75 a month billed yearly covers one profile on each of 8 networks.

The short version: the networks you post to decide it before the price does. Later does not list X, Bluesky or Mastodon; Buffer does not have Later's Snapchat or its link-in-bio page. For one to three channels Buffer is cheaper, and free. From about four channels, Later's flat set usually costs less. Prices from Buffer's pricing page and Later's pricing page, read on October 27, 2026, in US dollars before tax.

Is Buffer cheaper than Later?

For one to three channels, yes: Buffer's free plan covers them, and Essentials is $15 a month for three. At four channels Buffer Essentials is $20 against Later Starter's $18.75, and Later's set includes up to 8 profiles. So the answer turns on how many networks you use: few, Buffer; many visual ones, Later. Later's pricing page shows yearly-billed prices only.

Which networks does each one cover?

Both cover Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest and LinkedIn. Buffer adds X, Bluesky and Mastodon, which Later's pricing page does not list. Later adds Snapchat. If X or Bluesky matters to you, that settles it for Buffer.

What does Later do better?

  • A visual planner built around Instagram's grid, for brands that post images.
  • Link in Bio on every plan, with its own analytics.
  • Many profiles for one price: a set of 8 profiles on Starter, and extra sets at $11.25 a month on Growth and Scale.

What does Buffer do better?

  • A free plan that schedules 10 posts on each of 3 channels.
  • Text networks: X, Bluesky and Mastodon.
  • Unlimited users on Team, and a comment inbox on every plan, where Later's inbox starts on Growth.
  • AI agents: an official MCP server, so Claude and other agents can schedule into your Buffer queue.

What if writing the posts is the slow part?

Both tools schedule what you write, with an AI helper for captions. Skryvo, which we make, learns your brand's voice and drafts a version of each post for each network, then publishes after your go-ahead, from the app or from Claude and ChatGPT. It starts free for writing and $15 a month for scheduling, and publishes today to LinkedIn, X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Pinterest, TikTok and six more; Instagram, Facebook, Threads and YouTube are waiting for platform review, so for an Instagram-first brand Later fits better today. Buffer vs Later: the verdict

Choose Buffer for X, Bluesky or Mastodon, for one to three channels, or for a free start. Choose Later for an image-led brand on Instagram, TikTok and Pinterest that wants many profiles and a link-in-bio page at a flat price. Still comparing? I wrote this myself. I have built mobile apps and websites for companies in the US and Europe since 2022, and I built Skryvo after one too many AI drafts fell apart the moment someone checked a fact. Everything I publish here is tested on my own work first, and I show the numbers, including the ones that did not go my way.
