The best time to post on Instagram is midday to early evening, Tuesday to Thursday, in your followers' local time. Three studies published in the past year agree that midweek wins and that the early hours of the morning lose. Wednesday is the strongest day in both Buffer's and Sprout Social's data, and the weekend is among the weakest everywhere.
The short version: post on Instagram between noon and 7 p.m., Tuesday to Thursday, with Wednesday first. Avoid 1 to 7 a.m. and go light on Friday and Saturday. Reels follow the same windows, with evenings worth a test. Treat these as a starting point, then keep the hours your own Insights reward after two weeks of testing.

What is the best time to post on Instagram?
Tuesday to Thursday, from about noon to 7 p.m. local time. That is where the three studies overlap. Buffer's single best slot is Thursday at 9 a.m., followed by Wednesday at noon and Wednesday at 6 p.m.; Sprout Social's busiest window is Wednesday from noon to 9 p.m.; Hootsuite's covers Monday and Tuesday afternoons and Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. If you post once a day, start at noon on Wednesday and in the afternoon on Tuesday and Thursday.
| Study | Data | Best time on Instagram | Worst |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buffer, September 2026 | 9.6 million Instagram posts, January 2024 to December 2025, ranked by median engagement rate | Thursday 9 a.m., Wednesday noon, Wednesday 6 p.m.; best days Wednesday, Thursday, Tuesday | Friday and Saturday; 1–5 a.m. on any day |
| Sprout Social, March 2026 | Nearly 2 billion engagements on about 307,000 profiles, November 2025 to February 2026 | Monday 2–4 p.m., Tuesday 1–7 p.m., Wednesday noon–9 p.m., Thursday noon–2 p.m. | Saturday and Sunday; 3–7 a.m. |
| Hootsuite, November 2025 | More than 1 million posts across networks, with Critical Truth, normalised across 118 countries | Monday 3–9 p.m.; Tuesday 5–8 a.m. and 3–7 p.m.; Thursday 5–7 p.m. | Midnight to 4 a.m. |
All times are local to the audience. Figures read from each study's own page on October 22, 2026.
Why do the studies disagree?
They measure different things on different accounts. Buffer ranks hours by median engagement rate (likes, comments, shares and saves divided by followers) on posts its customers scheduled over two years. Sprout counts engagements on the profiles its customers manage over one winter quarter. Hootsuite pools posts from every network and normalises the hours across countries. Each sample is mostly brands that pay for a scheduling tool.
So read the overlap, not the single numbers: midweek beats the weekend, and the afternoon is the safest part of the day. Mornings are where they split. Buffer finds weekday mornings weak except Thursday from 7 to 9 a.m., and Hootsuite lists Tuesday from 5 to 8 a.m., so a morning slot is worth one test, not a habit.
What is the best time to post Reels?
The same windows as other posts, with evenings worth a test. Sprout Social found that the best times for Reels mirror its overall windows. Buffer suggests trying Reels from 6 to 11 p.m., strongest on Wednesday and Thursday, but notes its data did not separate formats. Test Reels in an evening slot and a midday one before you settle on either.
What is the worst time to post on Instagram?
The early morning, roughly 1 to 7 a.m. Buffer found 1 to 5 a.m. weakest on every day, Sprout calls 3 to 7 a.m. a dead zone, and Hootsuite marks midnight to 4 a.m. The weakest days are Friday and Saturday in Buffer's data and the whole weekend in Sprout's. If your followers live across several time zones, the worst time is whichever hour is night for most of them.
Best time to post on Instagram by day
| Day | Start here (local time) | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 2–4 p.m. or 7 p.m. | Sprout's Monday window; Buffer's top Monday hour is 7 p.m. |
| Tuesday | 3–7 p.m. | Inside Sprout's and Hootsuite's Tuesday windows |
| Wednesday | Noon, then 6 p.m. | Buffer's second and third slots of the week; Sprout's peak day |
| Thursday | 9 a.m. or noon–2 p.m. | Buffer's top slot; Sprout's Thursday window |
| Friday | Evening, if at all | Weak in Buffer; no clear peak in Sprout |
| Saturday | Skip, or 8–10 p.m. | Among the weakest days in both |
| Sunday | 8–10 p.m. | Buffer's Sunday evening hours; weak in Sprout |
The table is built from the studies above, not measured by us. Your own test overrides it.
How do I check my Instagram analytics?
Switch to a professional account (Business or Creator), which is free, and open your Professional dashboard from your profile. Its insights show how many accounts each post reached and how many interacted, and the follower insights show the days and hours your followers are most active. The menu labels move between app versions, so look for the follower activity chart under your account insights.
Two cautions. When followers are online is not always when they engage, so compare post results rather than trusting the activity chart alone. And compare engagement per account reached, not raw likes, so one popular post does not decide your schedule.
How to find your own best time to post on Instagram
- Check where your followers are. Use the follower insights to find their main city or time zone, and work in that time.
- Pick two slots inside the shared window. For example Wednesday at noon and Thursday at 6 p.m.
- Alternate them for two weeks. Keep the format and topic similar so only the hour changes.
- Compare reach and interactions per post. Use the insights for each post, not the follower count.
- Keep the winner and test again next quarter. Audiences and Instagram's ranking both change.
In Skryvo the Performance page measures the best hour on each channel from your own published posts, and "Use best times" makes that hour the default for new posts. Until you have a few weeks of posts, start from the shared window above.
What is the 3-2-1 rule on Instagram?
A content-mix rule of thumb, not an Instagram rule, and versions differ. The common one: out of every six posts, three give value (tips, how-tos, behind the scenes), two start a conversation or show the people behind the brand, and one promotes what you sell. It keeps a feed from becoming an advert.
What is the 4-1-1 rule on Instagram?
Another content-mix rule of thumb: for every six posts, four share useful material, often from others, one is a soft promotion and one a direct one. Treat it as a starting ratio. Instagram ranks posts by what people engage with, not by your ratio.
Schedule the week at your hours
Once you know your hours, stop posting by hand at them. Schedule Instagram posts and Reels up to 30 days ahead in the app or in Meta Business Suite, keep captions inside Instagram's 2,200 characters, and plan the month in the free social media calendar template. If the same posts go to Facebook, check the best time to post on Facebook too: the two windows differ.
