The best AI email assistant depends on whether you want help with your inbox or help writing emails to many people. For a fast inbox with AI drafts, Superhuman. For cold outreach and mail merge from Gmail, Mailmeteor. For polishing what you wrote, Grammarly. For marketing emails in your brand's voice, checked before you send, we built Skryvo. For a one-off email, ChatGPT or Claude will do.
The short version: an inbox assistant reads and replies to your mail; an email writer drafts campaigns, newsletters and promotions. Few tools do both well. Prices below were read from each tool's pricing page on November 7, 2026.

What is the difference between an AI email assistant and an AI email writer?
An assistant works inside your inbox: it sorts mail, drafts replies and learns how you answer. A writer starts from a brief and produces an email you send to a list, such as a promotion, a newsletter or a welcome message. If your problem is 200 unread messages, buy an assistant. If your problem is next week's campaign, buy a writer.
Best inbox assistant: Superhuman
Starter is $25 a member a month billed yearly, with its AI, team collaboration and calendar. Business is $33 and adds auto drafts, Ask AI, custom auto labels and CRM integrations. It suits people who spend much of the day in email and will pay to get through it faster. It is not built for writing campaigns to a list.
Best for outreach from Gmail: Mailmeteor
Starter is $5.99 a user a month, or $4.49 billed yearly, for 5,000 emails a month, with reply detection and email verification. Premium is $17.99 for 30,000 emails, with follow-ups, auto labels with AI and auto drafts in your voice. It suits a founder or small sales team sending personal-looking mail at volume. Check each list against the sending rules; our email generator page links Gmail's sender guidelines.
Best for marketing emails: Skryvo
We make Skryvo, so weigh this one accordingly. Say what the email is about, pick its type, such as a promotion, newsletter, welcome or re-engagement email, and it writes the email with subject lines and a preheader. It shows the email as it lands in an inbox and gives it a Send-Ready score for deliverability, specificity and honesty. The free AI email generator gives you 3 emails with no sign-up.
The free tool also takes merge tags and has a reply mode. A plan adds your brand voice and fixes for most Send-Ready findings. The trade-offs: Skryvo writes email and does not send it for you, it does not manage your inbox, and it has no free plan beyond those tools. Hobby is $15 a month after a 7-day free trial.
Best for polishing: Grammarly
The Pro plan showed $12 on the page we read, adding full-sentence rewrites, tone changes and 2,000 AI prompts over the free plan. It is the right tool if you write your own emails and want them clearer. Check the billing period at checkout, because the page we read did not make it clear.
Best for a one-off email: ChatGPT and Claude
Both have free plans, and for a single tricky message they are hard to beat. The limits show at volume: you repeat your voice and facts in each prompt, and you check every claim. In our test of seven chatbots, six added product features we never mentioned, so read every line about your product.
Is there a free AI email writer?
Yes. Skryvo's free AI email generator needs no account for 3 emails, and ChatGPT, Claude and Grammarly have free plans, with limits. For regular sending, the free limits run out quickly, so test with real briefs before you plan around one.
Can AI write emails that sound human?
It can, if you give it something real to say. Stock openers and vague claims give AI email away more than any single word. Name the offer, the date and the reason for writing, then cut the first sentence if it could open anyone's email. Twelve signs of AI writing shows what to look for.
How to choose an AI email tool
- Separate the two jobs. Inbox help and campaign writing rarely come from one tool.
- Test with a real email. Use last week's hardest reply or next week's promotion.
- Check the claims. Prices, dates and features are where AI drafts go wrong.
